Well, I did what I said I was going to do yesterday. I had 5 or 6 NOS,1949-50 temperature gauges and I "Jury Rigged" them and tested every one. I had stated in aprevious thread that when the gauge on the car reads high, that the fault may not be the probe on the cyl. head, but the gauge might be faulty.Well, the radiator temp. 180 degrees on all of these tests. Some of those gauges read between 1/2 and 3/4; some read on the right edge of the middle mark, and some read about 1/3 of the way to the 3/4 mark! My gauge in the car always read at the 3/4 mark.So I exchanged it for one that read in the middle; where Ford said it should read! Note: the" boiling over" point is when the gauge reads all the way at the last mark-that is 212 degrees! So if you car's gauge reads 3/4 it is not too hot!!
