What type of jack came with a '48 ford car and are they available anywhere?

According to the 41 to 48 Ford book (Available from the Early Ford V8 Club on the home page of this web site) a 48 car should have a pressed steel bumper jack 51A-17080 C1 or C2 until approximately 1/17/48 and a pressed steel bumper jack 8A-17080 A1, A2 or A3 after that date or after the assembly plant exhausted its supply of the earlier ones. You need to look at the 41-48 Ford book for descriptions of these 5 jacks.

They do appear from time to time on E-bay. You most certainly would find one at the big Hershey meet in the fall. Perhaps someone in you local club has an extra one.

There were several versions of the "bumper jack" supplied to Ford by vendors in the late 40's. They were, and are, dangerous tools that often allowed the car to fall, and usually resulted in a "cocked" bumper or worse. Many of us carry a "scissor" jack or similar substitute for those reasons. If you insist on the bumper jack, be sure to carry blocks to prevent the vehicle from moving as the jack is used. The excellent Club 1941-48 book cantains extensive jack information in "Appendix B-Tools".
