Chose to install oil filter from one of our 40-41 engines onto our running 46 engine, (it never had a filter) using the 46 pan, (Unable to recover the early pans right now) The return fitting in the 46 pan has never had an open passageway, so we just drilled it open. Later we came across a sentence in a printed Ford bulletin stating the size for that fitting at the pan. We had drilled it larger, not sure what right now. Does anyone know what that Ford "required" hole size is?
