Can anyone tell me what the spec is for brake drums for 40 ford. Is there a recomendation on the best source for new ones? Is there a difference in quality I should be aware of if I need to buy new drums?

Original inside diameter is 12 inches. The maximum safe cut is .060, although we have seen many cut further. New drums are available, although a bit pricey. Look on page 34 of the C&G catalog on www.cgfordparts.com

Thanks for the help. I'll check them. Are the Lincoln servo kit upgrades a big improvement? I have seen the ads in the V8 times. This a Dearborn car that I drive occasionally and may do some tours with.

I can't say if the Lincoln kits are an improvement, We install new wheel cylinders when overhauling brakes. Years ago, we used to hone the pits out of the cylinders and install new cups and boots, but often the aluminum pistons were corroded, too, particularly on lightly driven cars. Some NAPA stores have wheel cylinders, or you can order good quality replacements from C&G (800/266-0470) for about $50 each. I believe overhaul kits are a waste of time and money. As you install them, remember that the large end goes toward the front, and the short (reverse) shoe faces the rear. We also replace the brake return springs. For less than three bucks each, it is a good idea. Your brake system will last much longer if you replace the old fluid every couple of years by bleeding the cylinders until you get clear fluid.
