Am getting ready to tackle a driver side door sag on a 40 coupe.The hinge pins seem to be in decent shape without any free play. When I lift up on the door, it seems the "play" is in the lower area. I will be taking the door panel off to inspect that area. My question is: is there anything in particular I should be looking for regarding the door frame itself? Thanks for any input.

You will likely discover that the frame of the door at the lower hinge mount is stress weakened, allowing the weight of the door to pull the door down and in toward the A pillar. You will be able to see this movement on the outside as the hinge moves in and out as you lift/lower the door. The fix will require either removal of the door skin, or opening up the inner metal panel at the lower hinge, in order to access and rebuild the hinge mount of the door frame. As this is an area that is subject to continued stress and flex, do not weld the hinge directly to the door skin. Alan

My bet is that the lower hinge pin is worn out, because it carries most of the weight. And over the years that I have been working with cars(60years) I have found that to be the case! Regards, Steve Lee
