im currently restoring a 1940 hot water heater the 2 door correct one, looks like it was a light gray color im looking for something close in a spray can any suggestions

If you have a sample of the paint that still remains on the heater you can take it to a local automotive paint store and have some paint mixed to match the color and put in a spray can.

Ask the club's 1939-1940 advisor, Mike Kubarth, kubes40@att.net

  Good Morning--
Photos attached of my restored hot water heater. Your light gray color description is kinda correct. But I'm hoping the photos will help the guy at the paint store, match the correct color for you.
Don't forget the 6 red stripes (3 on each side).
As 4drFordSC points out, our esteemed, all-knowing Tech Advisor, Mr. Michael Kubarth, should be able to answer any further questions for you on the heater, or help with your restoration.
Good luck.
Tom

  Glad I could help.

I'm not sure what other heater parts you already have.

Attached is another photo showing the 2 speed heater switch. It's the ivory colored switch at the left of the photo. They are a bearcat to find! It mounts at the bottom of the dash. The words "Fast" and "Slow" are inscribed/painted on the knob, indicating the heater speed.

Hope that helps some more.

Tom

tom I do have the switch plus a new wiring for it also have mostly everything I need except the 2 special clamps that hold the heater hoses to the spark plug conduit that all venders are out of stock now, the cover still has some paint left and I will take it to the paint shop and see if they can come up with a match

here is switch and parts I have, the motor tested ok ,I will wire up to switch and see if switch is ok

The switch looks a little dark/discolored, but may be OK.

When you get your paint, use both the photos and an actual, original paint sample to buy it. I may be wrong, but the photos seem to give my heater a slight ivory tone, which of course, is not correct. Might be my camera.

Between the paint sample and the photos, your paint color should be spot on correct.

Was the color also billed as "hammer finish?"

whizzerbug    -- 11-22-2019 @ 11:19 AM
I took the heater cover to the paint shop he came up with a ford tractor color witch was spot on and put it in a spray can for 25 bucks well worth it I think

If you go to the club roster (California) look for Larry Caplan. He at one time (maybe still does?) provided parts for early Ford heaters. He may have the clamps?

Thanks Ken, for jogging my failing memory!
Agree - Larry Caplan is the "go to guy" for heater parts. I got my heater from him.
Good guy - very knowledgeable.

Larry may still have some heater switch knobs. He sells a stripe kit and a rubber and screw kit. I used his kit to restore my heater except for the stripes, I painted those.

Your lucky the switch has the chrome bezel just under the knob. MOST are missing from the switch. ken ct
