Topic: 1935 engine swap

Does anyone know if it is possible to install a 1940 Ford Flathead in my 1935 Ford 5 window coupe? I want to use the transmission that is in the 1935. If so are there any challenges I should be aware of? Thanks for your help.

The 1940 engine should fit nicely in your engine compartment. The transmission will fit the bell housing and the 9" clutch should also work.

You will have to use different radiator hoses and check the engine for level with the chassis, because the motor mounts are different. I am not sure which exhaust manifolds will work best. There may be other issues that I am not aware of.

The '40 engine swap into your '35 should be a direct fit. I would suggest you use the '35-36 exhaust manifolds. You will need new upper hoses due to the center port in the head, NAPA #7964 is the upper hose you will need..
I put a 59AB engine into my '36 coupe in 1954, engine is still there.

Bob Drake sells a hose kit to fit the later engine into an early car.
Nice hoses

I forgot to mention that there is no issue with the motor mounts. The 35-36 mounting holes are the same as the '37-48, use new '37-48 motor mount pads with the large washer on top of the mount and a large washer under the mount nut.
The 8BA, 8CM, 48-53 have front mount issues.
A '39 trans with the 35 rear mount would be a better option in lieu of the 35.. You can put '39 gears into the '35 case, however, it is not worth the effort.
I have a '47-48 Merc column shift trans in my '36. Has syncro's in low gear like the '39 and later, a little taller low gear ratio. There again the column shift trans is a bolt in modification.

I was doing some cleanup in my garage during the past weekend, came upon the Drake box that contained a complete set of upper/lower hoses for the '37-48 engine into a '35-36 Ford. The lower hose has a slight off-set which really makes it's installation much easier.

FWIW. This won't cause any problem, but isn't the hole in the 35-36 cross member for the engine mount smaller than the 37-38? I had a 36 cross member put in a 37 panel truck and found the hole discrepancy. Just asking as we have a lot of experts (read that as sticklers) in the club. This is as much for my interest as yours. Thanks guys. 42oink
