Topic: 47 Ford Headers

I'm interested in putting headers and dual exhaust on my 47 Fourdoor driver. Not a hot rod or show car - just a fun driver. Any hints, suggestions, pitfalls I should be aware of before undertaking this project?

I had reds headers on my 41 perfect fit no problems, speedway sells tubular and fentons also

Do not use a pipe larger than 1 3/4" and the 1 1/2" pipe will give you better clearance for the clutch pedal. With the 1 3/4" pipe, my 40 Merc. clutch pedal just hits the pipe when the pedal is on the floor.

The cast iron Fenton headers are quieter in the car, but the bolts are difficult to get to and the dipstick holder has to be bent in order to fit. I relieved the casting a little to get more clearance for the dipstick. I would have the Fentons ceramic coated as well. They will rust otherwise.

I would suggest that you reconsider the thought of putting headers on your car, generally speaking the only thing headers will do for you is to flatten your wallet.
The 59AB engine in my '36 Ford is a very well built engine, .o60 over-bore, improved heads, Weber cam and an HC ignition. I have stock 36 log type manifolds with 2" pipes and stock type mufflers.. Silence is golden, especially on a long drive, or when I get a little crazy blasting off from a stop light.
Larger pipes give a deeper sound, on an idle you can hear the cam over-lap.
I use to street race my 36 on a regular basis, very seldom got beat.

I agree that in your situation, there is no advantage in using headers instead of stock manifolds.
