Topic: 255 Merc in a 49 Ford?

Grant    -- 11-04-2019 @ 5:07 PM
Will a stock 255 cubic inch 1950 Mercury engine fit into a 1949 Ford?

Would the 255 oil pan interfere with the Ford steering linkage?

Might there be a problem with the driver's side Mercury exhaust manifold and the Ford steering box?

Does the 1949-style Ford transmission bolt right up to a 1950 Mercury bell housing?

Has anyone out there done this conversion?

Thanks for your thoughts.

All the accessories from the '49 engine will bolt on the 255" engine. If you have the '49 engine, just use oil pan, manifolds, etc, from it on the 255 if they are different. You will need to use the '49 bell housing on the 255.

1949,50 , and 51 Mercury are literally the same engine as the 239 ford of those years. The block is the same. T he only things different were the crank had 1/4 " more stroke, and the side draft carburetor, which together gave it the extra power. It should go right in.

Yes if you use the Ford water pumps, bell housing and oil pan. I would also use the Ford intake, so you could use the Ford carburetor.

Would the 255 oil pan interfere with the Ford steering linkage? Yes

Might there be a problem with the driver's side Mercury exhaust manifold and the Ford steering box?
The 49-51 Merc manifold has a Merc P/N, so there may be some differences. The 52-53 exhaust manifolds are the same.

Does the 1949-style Ford transmission bolt right up to a 1950 Mercury bell housing? No.

As other's have said the blocks are the same, depending on the year of the Mercury engine, the engine exterior components may be different. I would use as many of the Ford accessories as possible to make the exchange easier.
