Hi all-. Recently had fuel tank removed and cleaned along with lines flushed, sediment bowl cleaned and carb rebuilt BUT the fuel pump was not cleaned. My concern since there is some hesitation at times there might be some debris in the fuel pump. I would like to remove the top of the fuel pump, inspect and clean as needed. I would like to have a fuel pump rebuild kit on hand to replace parts as needed but don't know the brand or manufacture. This is where I need the experts to jump in! There was not a strainer in the sediment bowl...should there be one? The engine is a 1946 Ford 59 a-b flathead. Thanks all for your time and expertise!

That is an aftermarket FP and NOT correct for 46. Glass bowl pumps did not come out till 1947. I have a completely correct 46 pump that's restored to like new for $ 50 plus $12 shipping or a one like you have for $ 60 has filter in glass bowl and $ 14 shipping. (requires larger box). Ken, I may be wrong but I believe the late ‘46 built cars came with glass bowels. At least that was what I understood from the research I did. By the way, the rebuild kit I bought for my pump from you was perfect, and still working well. Also thanks for the good quality ignition parts. Brian

Ken is "mostly" correct in that glass bowl pumps were not introduced until very late in the 1946 model year. How late? I do not know the exact date. I'd suggest getting a pump from Charlie Schwendler in New York. He does wonderful work, is fair priced and actually tests every unit prior to shipping. You should have a screen or better yet a filter in the sediment bowl. Usually, if there is debris in the fuel pump, it would show up in the sediment bowl. Kits for your fuel pump are available from C & G Ford parts, Macs Ford parts and most of the other vendors that supply parts for our cars. You could also see if the have a new fuel pump, if you are sure that the problem is fuel pump related. When does this hesitation occur? How long of a period is the hesitation, several seconds or almost a minute. Do you have the stock 46 Ford ignition system? Tom

Do what ever you must do. ken ct.And possibly your pump cannot be rebuilt depending who made it. The valves must be removeable some are NOT. ken ct.

Ken does great work, I bought a new pump from one of the big suppliers, it got me about 6 miles from home and quit, put one just like it on our 38 convertible, first drive, backed out of the garage, wife taking pictures, it quit, had run about 10 minutes, called Ken he sent me one, that was 9 years ago...no more problems...thanks Ken
