Topic: Fuel tank for 1950 Ford

EWATERS    -- 06-02-2010 @ 12:57 PM
I just read the discussion by "47Fordor" re fuel tank issues. I have a 1950 Ford 4-door sedan that was in a barn in PA since 1967. I have been working on it and it is now in a shop where the engine is being rebuilt. I have had concerns re the tank since it still has gas in it ca 1967. I am inclined to replace the tank with a new one. The problem is, although new tanks are advertised in Mac's and other catalogs, I have yet to see any new retaining straps to install a new tank. If I do get a new tank how can I obtain new steel straps to suspend the tank? I would like to obtain straps designed for the task and vehicle rather than fabricating something that may be unsafe. Any information and pearls of wisdom will be appreciated.
Addendum: related topic: when I get the car operating, what kind of gasoline will I need to use"

Check out the Shoeboxford.com web site. It deals with 49, 50 and 51 Fords. Call the 800 number and Chris can tell you where to get straps if he doesn't have them. As for gas. Just use regular unleaded.

Bob Drake is running a sale on the 49-51 gas tanks. Regular price $325. Sale, $243.75. (800/221-3673). Part number is 8A-9002, and they accept original fittings. They don't mention the straps in the catalog. One of the best things to do when a car has been in long storage is to replace the gas tank. It saves endless problems with driveability.

Thanks for your replies. Supereal suggests "Bob Drake" as a source. I'll try online. Do you have a website I might try?
