Topic: '48 Ford Convertible Lower Radiator Hose HELL!!!

Just did the hardest job I have done to date on my '48... Replaced the passenger side lower radiator hose... The last work done on the car included changing all of the hoses, but the mechanic did not have a nipple for the heater hose, so it was left off. Tonight, I remedied that; but I pray I never have to do that again any time soon! I ended up doing three things that made it even remotely possible to put the hose on: 1) Took an old flathead screwdriver and bent the end 90 degrees (vice and oxy/mapp torch). 2) Used silicon on the water pump inlet and the radiator outlet. 3) Put the hose in boiling water for few minutes. Even with all of these tricks, it still d*mn near killed me to get the hose on; and I thought replacing the distributor was hard!!!

Replacing the lower radiator hoses on a Flathead can be a real challenge! When I did the job on a 1953, the hoses with original type scripts purchased from one of the popular vendors had to have three inches cut off of each before they could be installed.

When lower hoses need replacing is an excellent time to replace the motor mounts, both jobs made easier by doing them together. With the engine raised to place the new mounts, the hoses can be positioned to slide into place as the engine is lowered onto the mounts.
