Topic: Gas for 47 Ford

I just inherited my grandfather's 47 Fordor and am about to go pick it up early next month.

What type of gasoline do I need to put in it? Will it accept unleaded or is there some sort of additive you must put in? Also, what about ethanol, will this harm the engine or must you find a gas station that has pure gasoline? Finally, what octane (87, 89, or 93)?

Any expert knowledge anyone can provide would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

It should run fine on unleaded regular with up to 10% ethanol. No additives are needed. If you do hear some pinging, just move up to mid-range.

If you can avoid alcohol gas, do so, as it is likely the car has fuel system parts that are not alcohol resistant, and there may be residue in the tank that can be loosened. If the car wasn't driven recently, the installation of an in-line fuel filter close to the tank will catch any debris that could make use of your new found car dicey. The octane level isn't a problem, as these cars were designed to run on the old formulas which were much lower. If you hear spark knock when the slider on the distributor is in the full advance position, something else is wrong.

I use 87 octane in my '40; no problems.
