Topic: New member needs help with '49 project

Back in the early 60's I had a '49 coupe previously owned by a moonshiner which my father traded off for some livestock. Fast forward 58 years and I've finally replaced it with a '49 sedan that was frame on restored about 15 years ago and has degraded to a nice driver. My goal is to duplicate the performance of that long gone car.

My first step is to install an Offenhauser manifold with a 390 cfm Holley 4 barrel. Has anyone done this and could you provide me with any info about glitch's encountered. Do you have to relocate the generator? Starting size for primary jets (has 512's now)?

Future plans are for headers and a set of aluminum heads. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance for any help.

I have no experience with the Holley 4 barrel, but here is a link to a discussion on it in the HAMB.

I hope thta this helps you out.

Install the Holley backwards so it will line up with the accelerator linkage. Use a 1" spacer so it will clear the generator. The generator will be a little off center on the Offenhauser intake, but it's not a problem. Sorry, can't help with the jets, but I'd start with the ones it comes with and go from there. Suggest Offenhauser heads and Fenton headers. And look out for the Revenuers:)

Nice car. I would consider changing the distributer also as the Loadamatic needs the proper vacuum signal.
Someone else here will have more knowlege on this.
You might try posting on the Ford Barn too. Enjoy the ride. mike

Thanks for the heads up on the distributor. Any recommendations what is good and what to avoid? The car still has the 6 volt system so it looks like choices are limited. I'm trying to stay with an old school look. A combo of vacuum and mechanical advance would be nice but if I have to make a choice between the two I'd go with mechanical.

Since you're already not entirely original, you might consider a Chevrolet (Delco) distributor, as converted by Jim Lindner (aka Bubba): http://www.bubbasignition.com/loadamatic-replacements.html
