i just replaced the bushing with a bearing on my 41 1/2 ton pickup. if you look for my ad of about 9-15 on this issue and read the replies, you will see there is a man who makes these bearings. or you can contact me.

You definitely can use the '42 and later bearing in the '40 column. You can buy a kit from C and G or other vendors which has the bearing, tapered sleeve, and spring. Cost is about $24.

yes i bought a bearing from c and g the only problem i had was when i asked how far down the column i was told 3/4 of in it need to go down a lot farther than that for the spring to clear the wheel keyway but it works fine

I agree that 3/4" is not far enough for the spring to work like it should. . The stock F-100 column uses the 3/4" measurement, but the bottom snout on the F-100 wheel is shorter than the snout on the earlier steering wheels. It's definitely a situation where you have to experiment with your particular column and steering wheel. I think on my '40 column I drove the bearing down about 1".
