Topic: 47 Ford steering worm gear install

jamesmundstock    -- 09-25-2019 @ 5:31 PM
I am putting a new worm gear on my steering column shaft. I measured the depth of the bearing end to the end of the shaft and the shaft was .050 from being flush with the end of the worm gear. This was my reference. I took the old one off and installed the new one. The closest I can get is .120. I am .070 short and cannot get it on any further. Any comments or suggestion would be appreciated.

If I read this correctly how far off is the new worm to the old worm? and
the new is .070 fatter, must have come from China. #1 mill .070 off the
worm or turn the shaft shoulder +.070 I prefer to mill the worm.

  hi 47 Ford
am I understanding what you are doing, the worm will not go all the way on the shaft,?
at this point you might have to remove the worm.?
was wondering if you heated the worm and cooled the shaft to ease in installing,
putting the worm in the oven heating it up.[ uniformly] do not use a torch, too much heat and can cause harm,
and the shaft in a block or bucket of ice cubes, driving it on with force is not good,
a friend of mine made a puller for the worm, worked great,
if you got a china made part, good luck,
hope this helps, 37Ragtopman be sure to use welding glove or the oven gloves
