Topic: 1938 Ford Generator Problem

Afternoon folks, so the generator in my 1938 ford doesn’t seem to be charging, the gauge isn’t registering anything, I installed a new cut-out and rebuilt the generator. How would I go about determining wether the gauge is at fault or the generator? How would I test this? Thanks in advance.

If you have one of those cheap Harbor Freight voltage testers (they cost about $5) you can follow the easy instructions for testing your voltage. They are a handy item to have around your garage. You can also use an automotive test light to see if there is any output from the generator. It won't tell you the voltage, but will light up if there is output from the generator.

  I assume you have a 3 brush generator ?
did you bench test it before installing ? well if not,
did you try adjusting the output by moving the 3rd brush when running , be care full of the FAN,,,
if you remove the generator belt, you can use a 10 gauge jumper wire ,or use a set of battery jumper cables,
use one, run one from the wire that feeds the generator [ NOT THE FIELD TERMINAL ? to the battery if it the generator spins it is ok,
if not the generator is not working,
cutout only works after a certain rpm, not at idle, rev the engine above idle , see what happens,
hope this helps 37Ragtopman
