I recently returned from an extended trip to Idaho and Montana.
While I was in Montana I had the good fortune to attend a farm auction. The auction was being held to clear/clean up the property for an ownership transfer.
Because of the remoteness of the farms/ranch's in Montana, it is best to attend any of these auctions because anything can turn up.
There was the normal old furniture, milking equipment, harness's, hand tools, etc..
The vehicles ranged from '35 to '85 Ford, some cars, mostly trucks.
The '35 Ford was in bad shape having been in a shed fire, there were two '41 Ford "tonner" pickups that were about used up...very little rust, but beat to pieces.
There were several flat head V8's ranging in age from '38-41, 46-48 59 AB, and a '49-53 which was being touted as a 49-50 Merc, which it was not. The eng had Ford type waterpumps and the Ford type cast bellhousing in lieu of the Merc pressed sheet metal BH.
There were two (2) pallets of misc. early V8 parts, heads, water pumps, exhaust manifolds, starters/generators, shocks, etc.
The bidders kind of got all fevered up about the trucks, even the burnt up '35. They also went wild on the engines, bidding $750. for the 59 AB. The auctioneer claimed the '42 distr. on the engine was a magneto...DA?
When it came to the two pallets of parts, people were not to excited, it was getting late in the afternoon and the weather had turned very cold.
I got both pallets of parts for $20.00. When you figure the core value of the parts, plus the rarity of many of the parts, the $20. was a steal.
