What is the correct wheel size for a 46? Is it 16 x 4? Thanks.

Don't know what you are measuring. The normal tire size is 6.00X16. The rim measures approximately 5" wide.

The correct wheel size is 16"x4".

According to my 46 Ford service manual specs and owners manual it is 16x6 which is what is on my 46 coupe with radials from Diamondback. I don't have the actual "measurements" but could do that for you if needed

John, are you reading the tire size or the wheel size? The correct tire size would be 6:00x 16 standard and that would fit a 16x4 inch wheel.

Ford pretty well stayed with the 16 x 4 wheel from '36 through '48. There are a lot of 16 x 4.5 and 16 x 5 Ford type wheels which could have been used on utility vehicles, e.g. s.wagons, sdn delivery's and pickups with the larger 6.50 x 16 tires.
It should be noted that the rim width is measured across the inside of the rim, not the OD...
The 16" rim was also available through at least 1966 on the F-100 pickups as a special order.. This rim has the same hub cap clips as the '40's style, however, it is usually a 5" wide rim.

Correctly measured between the beads, the original rim was 4" wide.
Original tire size (standard) was 6:00 x 16", 4 ply.
6:50 x 16", 4 ply were optional on all passenger cars.

Apprceiate the information. Here;s the story behind my question. I recently purchased a 55 Ford F100 and the only non-stock item is the wheel and tires. The truck is currently riding on P275/60R16 which in my opinion make the steering and handling a challenge. Since I replaced the 600 x 16 tires & wheels on my 46 Coupe with 15 in wheels/tires, I thought about using 16 x 4 wheels on the truck to see if I get better handling.

From my experience, the smaller tires (600x16) will greatly reduce the steering effort, but nothing will improve the ride and handling short of a transplant! I think the the correct tire size makes the truck look better, but that is in the eye of the beholder. The wheel size that you asked about is 16x4 and the tire size was 6.00x16. Your truck probably came with 15" wheels and 5.50x15 tires.

Steve, generally radial tires improve handling and steering and going to bias ply tires may increase your problems.

If you are having these issues with your truck, I would first examine the front end components for wear and adjustment.
