  hi
any pressure build up in the engine,? any blow by,?
oil breather cap clean, and no grime in it,
you might need to replace the rear main seal ,
is the engine rebuilt ?
need more info,

Ragtopman; Thanks for the reply. Unsure how to check for pressure in the engine, don't see any blow by, the oil filer cap is clean and there was work(?) done to the engine before I owned it. Had a old car mechanic put a rear main seal in it and it didn't leak until it was in storage for a yr, mmm? Planning to sell and would like everything up to snuff. Thanks again

That flathead 6 is something we just don't see up in Canada! I have never seen one except in pictures since all that seems to be around are the 239&255. Somebody chime in here that knows about them regarding the rear seal and whether it is similar to what the flathead 8's used? On the 49-54 or 53 for you down south flathead V8's they use a rear seal retainer or insert made out of aluminum and if you DONT USE any sealer such as Permatex form a gasket which is gasket goo or sh*llac or silicone sealer BETWEEN this insert and the engine block, oil will seep past and always leak, been there, gone through it! Attempting to put it on and rolling this insert up and into the block with the pressure of the rope seal pushing wipes the sealant off as well and history repeats. Having the engine upside down on an engine stand is a different story because the crank is out and you can clean the groove, apply the sealant, insert the upper seal retainer and work the rope seal into the retainer groove using a pipe or shaft and roll or work the seal back and forth pushing it down in place also allowing the sealant to set.
I guess another hope and pray is perhaps the rope seal has dried out a bit and perhaps driving it will soak it up with oil and soften it up. Perhaps give this a try first.
