  1936 Ford 5W
Model 68

What does Body number 770 mean?

Thanks

There's a few things worth noting in regard to your tag.
1) It is obviously not an authentic tag.
2) I am not 100% certain, but I do not believe any coupes received a tag. Only bodies supplied to Ford received tags. I am quite certain (not 100% though) that all coupe bodies were manufactured by Ford. Thus - no tag.
3) Authentic tags indicated body style and sequential manufacture of that particular body. the "770" on your tag indicates a five window coupe. There should be a dash and then another set of numerals directly after that "770".
That "68" on your tag is indicative of model year. In this case, 1936.

I too do not believe the coupe should have a body tag in 36. Usually open car and commercial vehicles had the tag. below is one photo of original body tags from 36 (Phaeton) as well as a reproduction with the correct number font. There is no dash between the body style and the Mfg. serial number. Each body manufacturer had a slightly different tag style.

Your repro body tag is incomplete and should have additional production numbers after the 770.

Murray did make most, if not all of Ford's 3-window(720) and 5-window(770) in 1935 and 1936. Their bodies would have had a body plate and it looked similar to your reproduction. Enclosed is a photo of what I believe to be an original 1935 Murray plate for a 1935 (48 prefix) 3-window coupe ( body #15505).

Thanks Mike. I can certainly same the same about you and 1940 Fords!!

Don is the "Go To Guy" for 35 and 36 Fords.

I like your car.

If it were mine, I would look for a 36 coil and have it rebuilt by Skip Haney. In the meantime, I would relocate the coil closer to the front of the engine. Having such a long high tension lead can lead to a weak spark at the plugs.

My '36, Delux 5 win cpe, with a production date of sometime in Aug 36, back window dated 8-36, does not have a body tag, never did have one. No holes in cowl where a tag would have been mounted.
