Topic: (Still another) Question on '36 dash lights

While installing a new dash wiring harness I discovered the dash light switch on my '36 Tudor did not work (open at all switch positions). Since I couldn't find a replacement, I just hard-wired the circuit so the dash lights would burn all the time (I thought). Recent discussions on this forum indicate that in normal operation pulling the dash switch OUT turns the lights OFF. Counterintuitive, at least to me. So, question is, what have I done to the dash lights by bypassing the switch entirely. Either they will burn all the time or they will never come on....50/50 chance I figure. Something else to work on when the car comes back from the engine builder.

Anyone got a dash light switch to sell and get me out of this mess?

Read the forum topic"36 dash light". The dash lights are controlled by the headlamp switch. All you did was bypass the dash lamp switch. The lights will only come on when you turn on the headlamps.

yes by by-passing the dash light switch your dash lights will be on when ever the headlight switch is in any of the three "On" positions.
I have found by removing the dashlight switch and placing a small rigid piece of non-conductive hard plastic between the two electrical terminals on the rear of the switch, so that the terminals appear to be parallel, many of the original switches will again function properly. I use a plastic wire tie and trim it to the proper width after inserting.
I have seen some of the switch terminals deformed so much that they touch.
