My 5W glove box door is not exactly smoothly operating...kinda clunks open and close. Is this normal? I have the spring installed which doesn't appear to do much with the operation...Also, anybody have a photo or dimensions of the metal detent at the top that engages the spring ball in the door? If by 'spring' you mean the spring wire rod that is used to attach the hinge to the dash, you're right, it has nothing to do with the operation of the lid once it is installed. '33-'34 glove box doors have no other springs to assist opening by resisting gravity or to assist in closing the lid. Those functions rely solely on your hand. Sorry, but I've no photo handy of the stamped retaining clip or of the formed rubber bumper retained by that clip at the top of the opening in the dash.

Pictures of the glove box in my '34 attached.... I am not experiencing the problem you describe. My door when closed stays closed even when I go over bumps. The door opens and closes crisply. I'm thinking that you might have to bend your detent a little bit or put a washer under it in order to lower it and therefore increase the tension between it and the ball.... thanks Dave and MG Yes, the wire "spring" is installed... The car was completely apart when purchased and I'm now done with the woodgraining, so so I was pretty surprised to find a less than smoothly operating glove box door. I'm used to 39 glove box doors which work like a charm...God Bless 'em! I'll post a photo of my installed 34 door today, but it looks identical to the MG install (and thanks for the photos, I'll fabricate the small clip and some kind of rubber bumper)

Here are some photos of my installed door. (I just finished wet sanding so there is some residue) Can the wire hook on a different way? 1 and 4 are looking up from the floorboard. (the site software rotated 3 and 4 which is irritating). It seems the curved ears of the bracket are supposed to rotate the door up and down, but mine kinda grabs a little and isn't a smooth operation This message was edited by MICHV8 on 6-30-19 @ 4:44 AM

Judging from your photos, it appears as though the arms on your hinge do not line up well with the slots in the glove box, especially the upper one in your third photo. In that photo it also appears that the upper hinge arm is bent out of shape whereas it should be straight and exactly 90 degrees from the base of the hinge where it is attached to the door. You could always enlarge the slots in the cardboard of the reproduction box if the hinge arms are in fact straight and at the correct angle.

Thanks Dave I'll take the hinge off and straighten out the arms...so should the hinge arms fit through the cardboard box slots as well?

The design intent was that the hinge arms should clear the sides and back of the slots without touching.
