Another club member has a flathead with only the raised cast number X 12 on the bellhousing. What does this mean?

Most casting numbers refer only to the succession of blocks during casting. The only usable number on old Fords is the number stamped on the frame. Look for it on the top left side, just ahead of the firewall. The other is on the frame "kick up" oner the rear axle, and not visible with the body in place.
