I am running a Holly 94 on my 24 stud engine which has a earlier, D shaped, intake manifold, designed for a Stromberg. I have been told to use a stromberg D shaped gasket on the 94,to block the hole in the manifold between the 2 rear studs on the top. That hole sends heat into the chamber where the PV is located and burns them out when using a 94 type carb. Is this true? Thanks John

That's news to me. You can use either gasket. If you want to eliminate the exhaust feed to the manifold, block the two passages in the block under the intake manifold. We used pennies for that purpose years ago, mostly in the hope that it made the exhaust sound have a better sound. I don't recall that it did, but it wasn't a difficult job to try it.

If you do install pennies in the block, I'm told that the wheatstalk pennies are the ones to use due to the later ones not having the copper content to withstand the exhaust heat. Your carburetor will thank you for your concern! Alan

Any penny prior to 1982 is copper. After that they contain zinc which has a lower melting point and may not stay in place. Blocking the heat risers does change the sound of the exhaust when using glass or steel pack mufflers.
