Is it possible to use the '49-'53 side distributer on the 59A block by changing the timing cover and cam? If so, what else needs to be modified/changed?

You will need to change carbs to provide the correct vacuum tap, provide a clamp on the right side head to hold the distributor in place, and calibrate the crank pulley to provide for timing adjustment.

Speedway Motors has a kit to mount a 49 to 53 distributor on an older flathead. The kit includes a adapter for the camshaft and a timing chain cover. I am not sure everything is in the kit. You might have to order individual parts.I can not find my catalog.

I am curious about why you would want to change from a very good distributor to a more troublesome one. The dual point front mounted distributor will last up to 20,000 miles before it needs to be serviced, while the 49-53 distributors require service as soon as 5,000 miles. When you make a conversion like you are talking about, you add more complications to servicing and maintaining your car. I am in favor of keeping the cars original to reduce the problems that occur from re-engineering. Tom

I agree with TomO. Most of the distrubutor problems with the front mounted unit are really condenser problems. Mount the condenser up near the coil. It will be out of the heat, and much easier to get at and replace. Mount a newer style condenser with a longer wire and connect to the dist. side of the coil (I believe the NAPA FA66 condenser is the one).Don't forget to disconnect the original condenser.
