Do you know if your engine has Babbitt main bearings? It's pretty hard to find a machine shop that can pour Babbitt these days. Maybe just a ring and valve job will do for you....

Not sure if they are Babbitt main bearings in my motor, did speak with a gentleman from New York that would make the needed Babbitt bearings we had a great conversation. Not that I don't want him to rebuild my 34's engine just looking for somebody closer to home. Now from what your saying there is more to rebuilding this engine the correct way than I thought. thanks

grilledstripedbass , what color smoke are you seeing, black, blue or white? Black indicates excess fuel, white indicates a coolant leak and blue indicates oil usage.

You should also have a dry and wet compression tests made on the engine to determine if the engine needs a rebuild.

Where about in RI, we are only about 20 minutes from E Prov. There is
a good chance its not a Babbitt job and may have a later rebuilt. Other
than that, we can rebore fit new pistons, all valves BUT if Babbitt we
have to send it out. Blue smoke says top end, however if the top end is
up to spec. then that will effect the bottom end, so that has to be checked
out. Quick example thermo clean block magnaflux, clean bores next size
8 pistons & rings polish crankshaft check cam check oil pump check clearance
rods mains full gasket set. Around 950 to $1100 and that was for a 59AB
we did Dec. 30, 2018. As of now as I type this engine is as quiet as a cat on
attack mode, gas mileage is unreal, power unreal perfect and this is my
every day set of wheels.. I suggest; what I did was to install a fresh late
engine so you have wheels while the original was rebuilt. Bottom line is
many early V8s got 41 & up dealer factory rebuilts cause of no new cars during the war. I'm just ah saying. sam
