Topic: fuel pump installation

I have a 36 Ford. I have never installed a fuel pump before and want to know if there are any tricks to know or more importantly, things to avoid. Most specifically the push rod that comes up from the cam shaft. It appears it just inserts into the cup like arm protruding from the pump. Is it a simple task of just inserting the pump arm onto the rod or is there something else to know? Sorry if I sound like a neophyte but the last thing I want to do is accidentally drop the rod into the engine if that's even possible. Thank you.

Push down real hard on the pump it will not go down easily your fighting a 1/4" of spring pressure. NO rod will never drop into engine !! East as pie. ken ct.

We prefer to install the flathead fuel pump by removing the stand, attaching the pump. then lowering it into place. This beats the awkward positions required for the job. Be sure the cup on the pump lever is facing down when putting it into place. As to the rod, the "umbrella" prevents it from dropping into the pan.
