With your kind and extensive knowledge, I was finally able to open the engine compartment. After a cursory look for the ID# turned up nothing, I thought I'd take a picture and appeal once again to the forum for guidance.
The picture I've attached is from the passenger side. For ease of communication, I overlaid a grid and, if need be, I can do the same for the other side. Could you have a look at the picture and point me in the right direction? You've already given such valuable help. Thanks so much - John

First -- you do not need to open a new discussion for the same topic.
As we mentioned --- it is the driver's side --- near the steering sector -- just follow the tube down from the cowl.
And the frame rail -- you have to look down and not across as your picture shows.
Also, as one has mentioned -- the number should be on the title.

I’m afraid I don’t have a title. And I apologize for the double post. Sad to say that, in both V8s and Forum etiquette, you’re dealing with a rank amateur. I’m eager to learn, though.

Look on the top, front, horizontal surface of the frame rail to the left of the steering box (driver's side of engine compartment). If need be take a rag soaked with mineral spirits to wipe the possibly grunge-covered surface clean. If clean already but rusty take a NON-abrasive/scratch scouring sponge 1st and try to clear the rust off to see the numbers and progress SLOWLY in media aggressiveness to clean the surface to expose the serial number. If paint is still apparent that was applied in the past it may have filled the numbers stamped into the frame - if this is the case try using modest, minimally-adequate amounts of paint stripper to remove it first before starting down the progressively more aggressive sanding media route.

Garrison,
If you look at frames E,4,5,6 on your grid on THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE CAR (left side), straight down on the frame rail of the car, your numbers are there. I used water, paper towels, a little rubbing with steel wool, and there it was on the frame rail. That's where I found mine. It's much easier if you take off the engine panel on the left side to get in there. Good luck!

All usa autos are drivers side is left side and pass side is rt side. ken ct
