Topic: piston exspanders

  These things have been around for a long time. As I understand it they fit in the split skirt. What holds them in place and what amount of slap can they correct?

  had piston slap in one cylinder--Took the piston to a napa machine shop outside of philadelphia and they had the machine to knurl the piston. This was done a lot in the good old days and some shops still do it. It expands the diameter of the piston and solved my piston slap. That was 2 years and 4,000 miles ago--good so far.

  Piston knurling was a standard procedure adopted during the war years and continued into the early 50's when parts were often hard to get, and expensive if you did. It was a "crutch" to get the last years out of an engine until you afford a "genuine" Ford rebuilt. As I recall. most NAPA stores had an in house machine shop. We started our machine shop years ago to fill the need.
