I have a 1939 Ford V8. I would like to know when I would need to fit con-rod bearings sh*lls that are 0.008" over size (Outside Diameter of the bearing sh*ll). The inside diameter of the con-rod big end is 2.229". The crank pin diameter is 1.978" (0.020 Undersized). I am struggling to get this information before I order parts. I have seen .008 and .020 some venders have. I prefer to resize the rods back to standard. Of course that will be done by engine rebuild shop. that way bearings are much easier to buy. Thats what I do. sam

When you have your rods reconditioned, the machine shop should determine if the big end needs to be resized to a standard over size. The original inner diameter of the big end of the rood is 2.220 on a 1939 85 HP engine. There should be .001" clearance between the rod bore and the bearing and .001" clearance between the rod bearing and the crank journal. The opening in the rod must be round, both rods on a journal should take the same over size bearing. If the cap surface has been filed or ground to make the big opening standard size, the rod must be discarded.
