Topic: Thin wall sleeves

  Hi
I'm still doing Research for how to rebuild my 1936 flathead engine. The block a have in the shop needs some sleeves (there's a crack who needs to get stitched).
I what to safe material from the original cast and don't want to bore that much.
So i would prefer thin wall sleeves. Those are hard to get. Maybe it's easier for me to reproduce some on the lathe.
I'm wondering why those are not common to reproduce for all the shops.
Do you guys have any expirience with those thin wall sleeves?

Regards from Switzerland

MAC's Auto Parts (877-230-9680) has Cylinder Sleeves, 0.080 thick wall - 3 1/16" Bore cast iron sleeves under part number 32-17830-1 (OEM P.N. 78C-6055) for $19.99 each. My understanding is that these can be very difficult to install. They will have to be bored to size once installed.

We install lots of sleeves at our shop on all kinds of engines. Most are sourced at Mahle. The process is complicated. and once the sleeve(s) are in place, they must honed to correctly match the pistons. It is not a cheap job, and the block must be MagnaFluxed prior to ordering the sleeves, particularly on a block with at least one known crack. If the crack is located near the top or bottom of the bore, it usually isn't advisable to proceed.
