The torque tube on the '39 keeps the rear end from rotating under acceleration/deceleration. The parallel rear springs do that on an open drive '42 truck. If you don't change to parallel rear springs, you will need to install a "backbone" to stabilize the rear. You will also have to convert your transmission to open drive if you continue to use it.

Most of the truck open rear ends were very low geared. The tallest I have seen was a 4:11. You can't use passenger car gears in them because of the changes to accomidate the open drive. You would be better off using a 35-6 rear with the strong radius rods and use a conversion kit to get the open drive.

I have a 42' banjo 3:78 I want to put the bells and axles from my 39' pickup on the 42' center section so I can keep my wide 5 lug pattern. The 42' has an open drive so I will have to add a backbone to prevent twist. Any plans out there for that anti twist fix? Thanks, Dan Flatties Forever

You're better off obtaining a 3.78 center section than to convert the whole system to utilize the open drive banjo you have obtained. Just a whole can of worms and expense you can avoid. Alan

No. The open drive R&P will fit the early housing, but - the truck pinion has a taper for the U- joint flange. The closed drive pinion has a spline to connect the drive shaft.
