Topic: A specific 1939 Ford Coupe

NickyA264    -- 01-08-2019 @ 4:54 PM
Hello! I'm very new to the classic car world. I was going through some of my Dad's old papers and Ifound the Motor number (not VIN) of the car my father owned in 1955 while in the Air Force. It was a 1939 Ford Coupe. The motor number is 5068751 or 50768751. It's written differently on two car insurance documents. Is there a way to find out if this vehicle still exists? Where it could be? My searching the internet has gotten me nowhere, so I must ask the experts! Thank you for any advice you can give.

- Nick

Yes, that appears to be a 1939 Ford number.

That number would have been found on the original transmission and on the automobile frame at three locations.

Given the privacy regulations practiced by most State Motor Vehicle Departments, and their disinterest in retaining old records, its unlikely you'll be able to locate the vehicle even if it still exists.

Not that it makes much difference now but the number you have is both the motor serial number and the vin number for the vehicle in question. In 39 Ford only issued sequential engine serial numbers for their vehicles. This was stamped on the transmission housing at the Rouge engine plant and transferred to the vehicle frame when it was installed. True vin numbers as we know them today did not come into being until much later.

Not sure if you are a V-8 Club member or not, but if you were you could run a want ad in the V-8 Times magazine with the information you are seeking. It's possible that's some V-8er may own the car.

so which number was correct? 5068751 or 50768751? Which number matches the '39 numbers?

Of these two listed numbers, the correct number would have to be the one with seven digits. According to the club's 1938-39 Ford Book, engine #5068751 was built between April 28th and May 26th of 1939.

Certainly not the eight digit number!

If you have any pictures you should post them. Was there anything unique about the car?
