John, the gear is pressed on and you should follow the procedures in the 1949-1951 Shop Manual to set the clearance. It is available from most vendors as a reprint and on a CD. https://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_mercury_late/ford-shop-manual.html https://www.themotorbookstore.com/1949-1951-ford-factory-shop-manuals-cd.html?cmp=googleproducts&kw=1949-1951-ford-factory-shop-manuals-cd&gclid=CjwKCAiAiuTfBRAaEiwA4itUqKbXBl7KECQlt5gVFpB5c4PJWuaXZcbfLQ5xzs1IsuCjfi0c3wEg_RoCjQQQAvD_BwE I prefer the CD version because I can printout the information, take it to the car with me and not worry about getting grease on it or ruining the binding on the manual.
