  Well, no it doesn't NEED to be. However, to do the job as it was originally done and to do it well, then yes, the rear window should be removed.

  The '41 rear window gasket is the same as the 42-48 gasket. There's no garnish molding and the window needs to be out to do the headliner properly. The gasket holds the headliner tight to the rear of the car.
