I am currently repainting my 1937 Ford V8 Phaeton convertible. The car was supplied in Bright Vineyard Green and I am re-painting it the same color with the help of spray-out cards that I had purchased from the Autocolor Library. I would like to understand what the correct color, width and appearance of the side stripe should be and what line it follows below the bonnet and along the edge of the trunk. Any images or illustrations would be wonderful.

Ravi, 1937 Fords having body color M-1751 Bright Vineyard Green were striped with M-744 Silver. The stripe was 3/32" wide, and began at about 3/8" behind the trailing point of the grille, took a sweeping dip to 1/2" below the belt line, and continuing on that line, following the contour of the body accent line below the deck lid, and back to the grille on the opposite side. Ravi, Have you purchased the V8 Club's 1937 book? There are photos in there that perfectly illustrate the stripe, and will answer many other questions you surely have about your '37 Ford. The attached may be helpful, at least for the front half of the stripe as it is the same for all U.S.-built '37 passenger cars.

Yes, in fact I did buy the 37 Ford book in 201o when I began the project. The paint shop that is doing the paint job for me now has the book but work will only allow me to return home and to the paint shop in a few weeks. By any chance, would you be able to tell me which page the stripe is best illustrated on ? I could then ask the paint shop to check it before they start the work. Much appreciated !

Ravi, I would not allow a paint shop to stripe a garbage can. That is something that takes a lot of practice to get it right, and there are those who specialize in striping. Wait till you get your car back and ask for references before you hire someone to perform that delicate task. Alan

Thanks you ! Very similar to mine, two doors less, a cabriolet I assume? I am taking a print out of this and comparing it to the stripe that that I currently have on the car (this picture was taken last year). I must repaint certain panels so thought it best to correct the stripe now if needs be. Mine seems to be slightly different , your opinion much appreciated.

The paint shop is part of a specialist car restoration workshop (the best we have here in New Delhi). Be that as it may, I am concerned because he hasn't much experience with Ford V8s. Would be very grateful if you could have a look at the stripe on the car in the picture and let me know whether it is correct or , if not, what could be improved. I will have to guide them as they are best facility I have locally. If that picture isn't clear enough, I have many more. I am very grateful to you for sharing your expertise. If you ever come out to India, I'd be happy to take you for a drive.

Ravi, I enjoyed the history of your car. The description of the paint stripe for the 1937 Ford is the second paragraph on page 2-2 of the 1937 Ford book and a photo showing the detail at the origin at the front of the car is on page 2-3.
