Oil seals no longer have a ”spring side.” How do I determine which side is the oil side? I’m replacing the seal at the front of a ‘36 tranny. The original leather seal had the spring towards the oil. Fortunately.

The lip on the any seal always goes toward the fluid or grease. Regards, Steve Lee

Unfortunately, no obvious lip side. To me anyway. One side does have a gap between the neoprene ring and the metal lip. The other side is bonded to the neoprene ring. This message was edited by fenbach on 9-15-18 @ 5:24 PM

You are correct, since the seal has a V it is not obvious and looks like it can go either way. In the Fordbarn, one suggested one way and the resident trans expert, Van Pelt, has said it in an earlier forum that it goes the other way. He prefers that the solid side goes to the oil. It is easier to press in with the solid side facing the mandrel. I think it works equally well either way and remember in 1949 Ford changed the design to one without a seal and with the bearing retainer having a screw groove to return the oil by slight contact with the turning input shaft.
