I just purchased a 8ba with the letter H on the top of and the letter A and numbers 2301 on the left side of the bell housing. (A2301). I would like to date this engine. Thanks

There should be a date code stamped on top of the block, on the right side near the rear, between the intake manifold and the right head. BT

Shepie The Engine codes for the 8ba were listed in Month, Day and Year order. M G B L A C K H T R S E F 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 So, for example, code S 15 R, would be S (10) Month(Oct), 15 day and R (9) the year 1949. Not all heads had the code stamped on the heads. My 8BA has the following: K 23 M 4. So that would be July 23, 1950? What is the 4 on the end for? Thanks

Don't know what the 4 is for, could be part of the casting. MGG, the spacing threw you off a month, K is really June. First letter, M, is zero and K is six. Don

I found the stamped numbers (B3M) on the very back left side of the block. Based on Big Red's very detailed information, this indicates a manufactured date of 2/3/1950. Would this be considered a late 49 or early 50? This engine was an update to a 1947, and was in a one ton ford truck. This engine has a red paint job which appears to be original . I think ford did offer truck engines and I am wondering if this could be one?
