Topic: Window Crank Removal

I'm trying to remove the window cranks on my '46 Coupe. When I try to push the escutcheon in to remove the retaining pin it seems like the pin is not centered in the crank, and prevents one side of the escutcheon from being depressed. Is there a trick to removing the handles?

Some of the reproduction escutcheons are made thicker than stock, I don't know if that is your situation or not. I use two plastic wedges on each side of the metal part to expose the pin. It should tap out with a punch. Bob Drake sells a tool for the job but knowing Drake, it's probably on backorder.

I have the Drake tool, but the problem is as I described. It doesn't seem to matter how I position or wiggle things, I can't get both sides of the escutcheon to depress. I don't know if the escutcheons are original or not, but by the patina on the them and the cranks, my guess is that they are original.

I would use woodiewagon46's method of using wedges to push back the spring loaded metal. It should work better than Drake's tool.

If the pin is really blocking the escutcheon from retracting, your only option is to destroy the escutcheon.

If you can see the end of the pin protruding from one side of the handle, you can use a pry tool like a very thin screwdriver blade or a knife blade to push the pin back in the handle far enough to let the escutcheon be pushed back.

If you cannot see the end of the pin, you will have to push back the side that you can and drive the pin out, ruining the escutcheon.
