  how were they as engines? are parts available? was the distributor somehow a rework of the v8?

  They were known for using oil. Properly rebuilt, that won't be an issue.
The distributor was unique to the V-12 as was the coil. Still, only a "cousin" to the V-8 counterparts.

Pistons, lifters, valves, etc. are readily available. cams and cranks are available but not as readily.
