Topic: Engine painting

I am reading the restoration guide and for 1947 it says the water pumps and timing cover are painted the Ford blue engine color and are held on by cadmium plated bolts. This makes it sound like thos components were painted first then assembled on the motor. This does not make sense. I would think the engine would be assembled and bolts and all would be painted at one time. Which way is correct? Thanks in advance for the replies from the experts.

It is my understanding that all castings were painted before they were machined. Painting after assembly would have required considerable masking and of course would have resulted in the bolts and nuts being painted which was not the case.

The cylinder blocks, heads, transmission cases, etc. were all painted after they were machined, not before. The masking was not that big a deal as special fixtures were used; no masking tape was employed. Later the practice was to paint the engine as an assembly.
