Topic: Expected valve adjustment interval

What is the expected valve adjustment interval for a newly rebuilt pre-war flathead V-8 using all new stock valvetrain components with a reground stock camshaft? The engine being rebuilt is intended for use in a daily driver and I am trying to determine if the use of adjustable tappets is the best choice. Please advise of your experience and judgement. Thank you.

In most cases, readjustment of the valves isn't required unless one or more develop noise, or a wet/dry compression test indicates a problem. The usual reason for adjustable lifters is the switch to straight stem valves and one piece guides. They are less apt to leak compression or oil, and resetting doesn't involve pulling the heads or regrinding the stem and/or valve seat. Unless you have access to a valve grinder, adjusting clearance properly isn't possible. Another reason given for not using the adjustables is the cost, usually between $225-250 for a set.

With a reground camshaft, adjustment of adjustable lifters becomes very difficult unless the lifter boss is drilled to accommodate a pin to hold the lifter from turning and you have the special thin wrench to turn the bolt.

I would go with the stock lifters and have the machine shop set the clearances.

Gentlemen, Thank you for your insights. I have decided to go with the OEM type of lifters, valves, and guides provided they are still available for the V8-60 engine.
