My car had this in a hole where the pan covers the flywheel and pressure plate. I thought it was odd but then I was looking on a website for reproduction Ford fasteners and it had a callout for this cotter pin to go in to the oil pan. What is this for? The loop of the cotter pin was on the flywheel side of the pan and the two legs bent at 90 degrees on the other side. Thanks in advance for the replies.

The cotter pin keeps the hole in the pan from clogging. The hole lets oil drip out without fouling the clutch.

deluxe40 Thank you for that info. I have one on my '46 Deluxe and was wondering about the purpose. So simple and effective.

About as simple as you can get. It simply rattled around and as deluxe states, it keeps the hole clear. I have seen them installed both ways.
