My '39 flathead starts & runs great when eng. temp is below 170. When it is shut down it will not restart if over 170. After cooling to below 170 starts & runs great again.

Could be the coil, but remember, this fuel we have today boils over causing hard starting by flooding & vapor lock. My 52 floods unless it isn't run long enough to get to 180 degrees. Float level is correct & fuel pressure in 2 psi.

Does the starter turn over the engine at a normal speed when the engine is hot?

Do you have good spark?

Do you see signs of fuel leaking around the bowl or base of the carburetor?

Nine times out of ten it's a bad coil. You need to talk with Skip.

It sounds like the engine may be flooded.

Try flooring the accelerator pedal, crank the engine in 30 second bursts resting for a minute between them. Do not let up on the pedal until the engine starts or you give up.
