Is anyone making "NEW" Ring & Pinion Sets ?

Yes, there are "new" reproductions mostly of the 3.54:1 and some 3.78:1 ratios. They are being advertised in Mac's Catalog pg. 30 (ranging in price from $450-$595 per set) and also in flyers by Joblot Automotive in Queens Village, Long Island (New York). Speedway Motors has gotten into the arena lately as well. ASSUME THAT THEY ARE ALL MADE OFF-SHORE. The market is simply too small for U.S. domestic high quality gear companies to make them with our anticipated high standard of quality and customer service! "CAVEAT EMPTOR"! should be your guide (Let the buyer be ware). None of the sets I have seen or attempted to use were serial number matched ring and pinion as were the original Ford Motor Company's '32-'48 gear sets (individually lapped and matched for excellent fit and mininal noise). The serial number of the pinion gear is stamped on the inside end and the ring gear has an "electric pencil" number scibed onto its outer face from Ford (look closely under bright light). The Ford made gears (if not in excessively worn condition) will always fit up and adjust nicely with no "howl" or problems. There are articles about proper gear fitup and bearing pre-load, housing gasket shim thickness, etc. in past issue of V8 Times and other good references (particularly Ford's own publications and Service Bulletins). The 3.54 and 3.78 gear sets I have seen from Joblot were very poorly made, particularly the pinion which had completely whacked out dimensions for the shaft and critical fit up surfaces for the bearing pre-load. Upon inquiry, Joblot said "the mechanic should use shims to fit the pionion gear properly". Since Ford never used a shimming system for rear axle pinion gear alignment, I asked if he meant the axle housing gasket shims, he said "no, you must use pinion shims". Well, rather than argue with the imbicile, I sent the parts back for refund. I have seen these poorly made Chinese gears being resold by other independent vendors as well. (Joblot sells wholesale to them). Ford original rear axle gears are the best choice, even used ones. They wear very well unless abused by hotrodders. So keep looking for the best and make sure you get serial number matched sets for best results. Don't hesitate too much to buy a complete rear axle just to get the goodies inside the center section! Get an agreement from the seller that if they are badly worn, you will want your money back. If considering bidding on something on eBayMotors, ask for close up photos of both gears and the tooth count on both so you know what you are getting. Besides obvious condition of the teeth for excessive wear pattern, pitting, chips, look and ask for the matched serial numbers of ring and pinion. Best to buy them with the pinion still in the center section if possible. Speedway Motors shows "Getz" gears "the oldest name in gears" (as if that is some kind of a reassuring high testimony?) in their new catalog pg. 241, with a range of ratios of 6.17, 5.86, 3.78, 3.54 and 3.25 (no 4.11). They have them priced at $349.99 per set. That's pretty cheap (hint, hint). Anyone know first hand what these are like for quality and their actual in use fit-up, durability and quietness? Are they "howlers"? Beware of this reseller's warranty policies, they seem to be rather thin unlesss it is their own in-house product, so your actual "mileage may vary". Always best to go to an independent early Ford experienced rear axle specialist who can find and fit-up real Ford gears for you so their is no disappointment. HI I installed a highspeed gear set from the V8 SHOP in NY, BALLSTON SPA, said they were made in ITALY, I have them in my car for 4 years no problems, I used mobil one for lube in the rear, parts looked ok to me,had no problems nstalling them also, just get the shim and gasket set, hope this helps 37 RAGTOPMAN
