Topic: Starter Voltage Reducer 12V to 6V

beehive    -- 07-29-2018 @ 10:55 AM
We have a 1950 V8 Ford. I’m having trouble with the starter. It is a 6V on a 12V system. It worked good for 5 years but now I’m braking the spring in the starter (3 times this year). Can I install a voltage reducer (12V to 6V) ? and if so where can I get a reducer ? or what is the beats way to fix the problem?

I don't know of any voltage reducer able to handle the current load of a starter, usually in the hundreds of amps. The six volt starter is durable, as your 5 years of use confirms. Your best "fix" is to find a new or rebuilt 6 volt starter for the nex five years.

Providing you can find a competent starter and generator repair shop, you can have your 6V starter made into a 12V starter.

You can also buy 12 volt mini starters for a flathead. They also eliminate the Bendix spring.

i think that the 1956 Ford starter will work and it is 12 volts.

Anybody know why we are getting the double posting of answers? All of a sudden some of my answers are showing up with a double post.

Tom, could it be that your answers are so good that they need to be read twice?

Double posts may just be because you are not patient enough. Steve Hansen posted a hint in this post:

I always wait until the system shows the updated post, before moving on to the next topic or another Forum.
