Have a '53 that was repainted back about 1978 and am trying to restore luster to the finish. What is a good way to accomplish this?

Try using an ultra fine rubbing compound. then wax. I would do it by hand unless you are good with a buffer. A buffer in the wrong hands can burn the paint. Also check with the auto parts stores as there may be some products on the shelf that will remove oxidized paint. There's a product called NuFinish that may work.

Try Mequires fine cut paint cleaner, if it doesn't work they have a medium cut paint cleaner that is more aggressive. If the paint is enamel, you may not be able to bring up the shine to original. If it is lacquer, rubbing compound will help.

Use Mother's clay bar to help remove the embedded contaminants before using any other cleaner or wax.

I agree, Clay bar first then the others because what makes it shine is a smooth clean level surface.

Don't use compound on Enamel!! Only on laquer!! If it's laquer, Buff it wth fine compound, then hand wax it. On enamel use a "Cleaner -Polish."If the paint is enamel and it's old and dull, and it won't polish, you will probably need to have it repainted.
