Topic: Searching for '40 Pickup Restoration Guidance

i885744    -- 06-27-2018 @ 5:41 PM
After about 20 years I finally got the bug to start working on my '40 pickup. This is not my first rodeo, probably about my 10th, but the first time I'm planning on being concerned about the correctness of colors, paints, etc. etc. I don't know if I'd ever get it judged, but I'd like to keep it as close to stock as possible.

I come mostly from the GM world where I know right where to go for restoration guides. What is available for my '40 Ford? The truck is an incredibly well preserved and as far as I can tell, mostly original vehicle, hence why I've never taken it apart.

Nice to "meet' you all!

Given your description of your "incredibly well preserved" truck, why restore it? "They're only original once". We live in an age where unrestored original cars/trucks are appreciated more and draw more attention than restored vehicles. There's something to be said about the 'patina' from age and use that is forever lost when a car is restored....

A 52 page booklet written by Howard Towne is available on this website. It covers 1940 and 1941 pickups. I haven't seen it yet because I just ordered one.

I'd be willing to help you. I had recently completed a painstakingly well researched and authentic restoration of a '40 pick up.

A couple of good photos will help us understand your restoration needs better.

The Early Ford V-8 Club has a unrestored vehicle class and the vehicle is judged on its originality. Original vehicles can be awarded a trophy if the vehicle has an original exterior, or interior or running gear or all 3 original. The AACA and most other clubs also recognize survivors. So you may want to consider not restoring the pickup. Posting photos will help experts on this site guide you into knowing what is original and what was changed years ago and looks original.

I've seen pictures of Mike's restored 40 pickup - "Perfecto!!!"

What a beautiful truck. as I told you before - "Nice job Mike".

Have a nice weekend, my friend.

Now then - "what is available for my "40 Ford"? The answer is "anything and everything". The wealth of knowledge that the contributors to this Forum have on '40 Fords, is truly incredible. They should be able to greatly assist you on your planned restoration.

Best of luck

Tom

Shouldn't this should all be in the 40 Ford forum?

It unfortunately isn’t as good as it sounds. It’s been painted once, poorly. Chassis has a couple cracks. I’m worried about structural integrity in at least one place.

I’d also in general like to do things right when I work on it. For instance, the rear brakes are leaking. I’d love to paint the rear end the right color while I have the truck in the air, buy the right brake lines, etc.

One of the water pumps is bad, want to make sure it’s the right one.

Is the most recent 40 book the one from the 80’s? Literally the only year that isn’t for sale on the web site is the 40 book.

I’ll pull it out and take some pictures this afternoon.

Thank you all for the help!

the truck pictured is a 41, wide hood "nose" trim , hood" wiskers" are cast not SS. Does the dash have a raised portion in the middle that has an attached Ford script or does it have an attached emblem like on the hood? Tail gate has no V8 emblem, just has a ford script. Howard Townes book is great for help in identifying differences in 40 and 41 pick ups

Your pickup does in fact have several characteristics that make it a 1941. A photo(s) of the upper and lower hood latching mechanism would also give a clue if it was a late '41 or an early '41. If it's an early '41 it may have been registered as a 1940 if it was sold in late 1940.

Yep, a 1941 pick up with numerous small modifications along the way but it appears to be a pretty decent old truck.

Yes I had known that for years. Thought perhaps it was a late in the run truck and this got the 41 nose parts. Also possible it was in an accident decades ago and put back together with thatever was available.

What are some of the other differences? The frame is a 40 according to the serial. So either I’ve got the wrong tailgate and front trim or the wrong frame. Hoping it’s the former.

Dash has a rectangular raised steel section and a bolt on ford script.

I’ll take a picture of the hood mechanism when I get home. I’m guessing it’s 41. The front sheet metal has all wrong hardware so I’m assuming it came off a donor car.

I noticed that your battery cables are 12 volt cables and the battery looks like a 6 volt battery.

The 41 serial numbers start with 18-5,896,295. If your serial number is higher than that, it would be a 41.

It's still 6v, +ground & generator. My grandpa changed the cables ~30 years ago. Rewiring the whole truck is certainly a to-do list item. Every single wire on the truck is red. Makes troubleshooting just a little challenging.
