Topic: Intermittent rough engine operation

I have a recently frame off restored 53 Sunliner- engine was rebuilt to a mostly stock configuration- points/ carburetor/ no new power options. Has an inline electric fuel pump as well as the stock mechanical pump. I have about 300 mi on the restoration. It began to loose power and miss and backfire thru the exhaust when warmed up at speed early on which a tap on the accelerator would correct- this was rare but now has progressed to a constant problem- at operating temp it will suddenly loose power, then lurch and run vey roughly until I push in the clutch and hit the accelerator at which point it will smooth out for a minute or so then start the same problem again, to the point where it almost becomes undriveable, often with a loud exhaust backfire. Any ideas? Coil, condenser, points? All are supposedly "new". Thanks!

The fact it runs better with a stab of the accelerator and that it backfires when it starts running rough would seem to point to a recurring lean condition. This can be caused by fuel delivery issues or vacuum leaks in either the carb or the engine. If you have a known good carb put it on and see if the problem goes away. Check for bad vacuum lines and gasket leaks on the carb or intake manifold. Of course don't forget to check the rate of fuel delivery. I don't trust the modern 6 volt electric fuel pumps very far. I suspect that some of them are just rebadged 12 volt units. They will still work on 6 volts but not very well and tend to overheat (making the pump run even worse) due to the low voltage which will cause the pump motor to draw more current to compensate for the reduced voltage.

Turns out that the OD lockout cable was making contact with the kick down switch and intermittently grounding the ignition! Needed new points, now all is well. If u deal with these cars long enough, eventually u see everything!

Learn something every day. Thanks for posting the fix. Not fuel related but inertia with the throttle and cable moving around.
